The Leading Release of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Position.

On the surface, Lux could seem more like an arduous scholarly challenge than a new pop album by an artist who just had a last single featured an international pop icon. Broken into 4 separate sections and performed in 13 languages, it is a breathtaking symphonic work investigating female mystique, religious transcendence, and bodily transformation, often via the prism of various female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward here, supported by the lush presence of a major orchestra and input from an award-winning composer within a long list of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself makes the efforts of contemporary artists seem rather laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That this album manages to transcend overly intellectual chin-stroking is almost a miracle, with full credit belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not her first album to fuse historical sounds with modern styles, its scale feel much higher here, and the tightrope walk more precarious. The element that truly raises this fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core sense of fun. Much like the legendary Björk at her peak, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. Even when she's breaking hearts in two, you nevertheless want to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That playful energy comes forth clearly on the stunning piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four minutes. Then, all the music drops away, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle and a comment before a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge thuds in with comedic impact. The song immediately shifts into the frenetic track driven by racing orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in the listener rarely quite know—or even want to predict—where you is going to next."

Nearly every track concludes at a totally distinct point than where it started. A track explores the fleeting nature of fame with a delicate symphony before disintegrating in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused work begins out dark and brooding, featuring menacing vocals, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir arrive to smooth the song's jagged corners.

The Balance Between Experiment and Pop

A key balancing act of the album involves navigating the gap between radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is little coincidence that it has become her first release to crack the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. A song sung primarily in the English language swells around a chorus that feels to gather increasingly infectious melodies as it spins skyward. That feat gets echoed on a different expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies as an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture honesty of other breakup songs, lambasting a former lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook character hiding a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a grand scale, a hungry reach for capital-A Art in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully manages its own inherent excess. This is a deep source of buried treasure that requires time to fully explore but never seem like a chore. While other major pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux offers a sumptuous banquet at which the guests around it, some tipsy on holy drink, flit from conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's most endlessly inventive visionary.
