The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.
Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
